The Los Angeles Chargers had a lot of work to do this offseason, especially after they moved on from top receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. They did what they could to address the vacuum left by those two, but by this point in the season, it is quite obvious that their offense lacks the firepower it needs to hang with the best of the best in the NFL.
Chargers Given Best Odds of Landing Chris Godwin
According to Bovada, the Chargers are currently one of the front-runners on someone expected to be the top wide receiver draw in NFL free agency come March 12th, 2025. They give them the best odds of landing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Chris Godwin.
The 6 foot 1, 210-pound receiver caught for more than 1000 yards and at least 80 catches over the last three seasons. He was well on his way to another before dislocating his ankle against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 7. In seven games, he complied 50 catches for 586 yards and five touchdowns. That TD mark sets his best season since 2020 when his team won the Super Bowl.
While Bovada says Godwin would fit well with Ladd McConkey, both primarily play in the slot. Godwin has plenty of experience playing on the outside, but it would need to be a cleverly orchestrated offense to find the balance between the two, especially when they are operating out of two tight ends and two running backs sets. McConkey currently lines up on the outside on 27 percent of his snaps.
Ultimately, it should be the Chargers’ priority to build a modern and elite pass-catching unit. They seemed to put the position on the back burner, having not signed an elite WR in free agency and passed on Malik Nabers and Rome Odunze in the first round of this year’s draft.
Having plenty of years of Jim Harbaugh-led teams as evidence, the Chargers may never value the position as highly as outsiders may desire them to.
