Los Angeles Chargers Expected To Hire Greg Roman To Jim Harbaugh’s Staff

It shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that new Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh is bringing in people that he has worked with in the past.

That now includes veteran offensive coordinator Greg Roman.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the Chargers are adding Roman to the mix in a “prominent” role on Harbaugh’s staff.

Previous reports had indicated Roman would come in and serve as Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator. It’s the same position he held with the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-14 under Harbaugh.

In his 10 seasons as an offensive coordinator in the NFL, Roman has led 10 top-eight rush offenses. Though, the passing game has lagged behind big time.

Back in 2022 with the Baltimore Ravens, Roman’s offense ranked 28th in passing and 19th in scoring. The previous season saw them finish 17th in scoring. That came after two seasons in Baltimore in which Roman-led offenses finished first and seventh in scoring, respectively.

Fans in Southern California might not be too happy about this hiring. For some, Roman is seen as a retread. His previous experience also includes a mixed bag. That includes Roman-led offenses finishing in the bottom half of the league in total yards six out of 10 seasons.

With that said, Roman’s experience with Harbaugh will provide continuity on the offensive side of the ball. It’s rather clear that this is what Harbaugh was seeking.

In addition to their four seasons together in San Francisco, Roman and Harbaugh coached together for two seasons with Stanford.
