Los Angeles Chargers Play 4 of the 5 Starting Offensive Linemen in Preseason Vs. Seahawks

It was reported that the Los Angeles Chargers opted to provide significant playing time for their starting offensive line in their preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks. The Athletic’s Daniel Popper posted to X that left tackle Rashawn Slater, left guard Zion Johnson, right guard Trey Pipkins, and right tackle Joe Alt were all in uniform and warming up.

The one exception to that was Bradley Bozeman, the presumptive starter at center. Bozeman was added in free agency this offseason after Corey Linsley announced his retirement. Mr. Popper named Brenden Jaimes as the player suited and warming up with the starters.

Since being drafted by the Los Angeles Chargers in the 5th round in the 2021 draft, the Nebraska Cornhusker has seen limited playing time. Last year, he saw his most snaps, 241, after starting the final three games of the season once Will Clapp went down with a knee injury.

While the preseason typically prioritizes evaluation of backups and fringe roster players, the Chargers’ approach indicates a commitment to their offensive line. The culture around playing starters has changed dramatically since head coach Jim Harbaugh last coached in the NFL. Many teams keep all starters and even some integral backups off the field and out of harm’s way in games that don’t matter.

This decision doubles down on the importance of protecting quarterback Justin Herbert and establishing a strong running game as foundational elements of their offensive strategy.
