Seattle Seahawks football is back! And what better way to kick off preseason football than a dominating win against the Los Angeles Chargers? The final score ended up with the Seahawks beating the Chargers 48 points to 17, with a 14 point shutout in the second half of the game.
Breaking Down The Seahawks Performance
While it’s important to keep in mind that this is only a preseason game, the statistics on some of the backup players look promising. Seahawks backup quarterback, Trevone Boykin, ended up with an impressive stat-line of 12 for 15 pass completions with a total of 189 yards and one touchdown.
The Seahawks running game, however, wasn’t much up to par, considering the whole team averaged 3.7 yards per carry. Although, Seahawks receiver, Kasen Williams racked up an impressive 4 receptions for 119 yards, with no dropped passes. Sunday showed that there is a lot of promise in the young Seahawks players.
Michael Bennett Controversy
To touch upon a major controversial moment, Seahawks defensive linemen Michael Bennett did not stand for the pregame National Anthem in protest. Bennett, like several other players, justified his actions by stating he was bringing awareness to racism and intolerance.
“I hope that I can activate everybody to get off their hands and feet and go out into the communities and push helping each other,” he told reporters. “Sit down with somebody that’s the opposite sex, sit down with somebody that’s the opposite race, different religion and understand that people are different and go out and join the community and try to change the society, change what you’re a part of. If you don’t like it, keep changing it.”
He also explained that the incidents in Charlottesville, Virginia motivated him to do what he did. “Charlottesville had a lot to do with it but I think it’s just the journey of who I am as a person. I think everybody has a time where they feel like they need to be who they are and stand up for what they believe in.”
“Of course I’m going to face backlash. This is bigger than me. This is bigger than football. This is bigger than anything that we have any different. This is about people. This is about bringing opportunities to people, giving people equality. This is bigger than a sport.”
My whole take on this controversy is regardless of what people think, if Bennett’s protest was right or wrong, this whole situation could end up bad for the Seahawks organization. I wrote an article not too long ago about the possibility of Colin Kaepernick‘s protests being the main reason why NFL TV ratings were at a low. Bennett’s protests could do horrible business for the Seahawks, which has a lot to do with why Colin Kaepernick is still a free-agent.
